We all find ourselves in a pit (Isaiah 42:22).  Your pit could be your career, your economic life, your relationship or your family situation.  You don’t have to remain there.  It might be part of the experience that you must go through but pit is not your destiny.  God’s job is to bring us out of a miry clay pit (Psalm 64:4).

Processes to avoid when in a pit:

a. Denial – Many years ago there was a man who had a mental handicap.  Every morning at 8 o’clock he would walk up and down First Street in his dirty clothes pretending to be busy.  He would have his rubbish bin lunch at 1pm and go home at 5pm. People would tell him that he was sick and he would shake emotionally denying this fact.  Denial causes you to remain longer in a pit.

b. Masking and make-up Makishi dancers or zvinyau, mimic animals. Their true identities must never be known.  They cover every part of their bodies.  To sustain the mimicking behavior some end up going into substance abuse.  Some even go into the occult, like inviting an animal spirit to live in them. In our spiritual walk we cannot put makeup or wear masks.  God wants to deal with us bare so that we can get out of our pits.

c. Getting stuck – There is a folktale about a trick to catch hare in which an adhesive is put on the image of a person.  The person inside the image would dare to be hit. Hare used his hand, got stuck; used the other hand, got stuck; kicked with his feet, got stuck, and so on.  That’s what the pit does to us.  Eventually we just get stuck.  God wants us to be unstuck (Psalm 40:2).

A pit is a miserable place.  You must get out!  If you are going to arise and shine this year you cannot remain in a pit.  Even if you fill you deserve to be in a pit because of a mistake you made, God’s love, grace and mercy wants you out of that pit.
